Tackling Food Loss

In Japan, approximately 5 million tons of food that is still edible is discarded every year. Additionally, 2 million tons of vegetables that are not shipped and discarded, known as “farm food loss,” also occur annually. Combining these figures, it is estimated that 7 million tons of food, or 52 kg per person, are thrown away. The cost of waste disposal per person is estimated to be 17,000 yen, and the amount of CO2 emissions is estimated to be 2 million tons, contributing to environmental problems.

4 Challenges of Farm Food Loss

Disposal of Non-Standard Vegetables

Due to the lack of practice in shipping irregularly shaped vegetables, highly nutritious and edible vegetables and fruits that have been carefully grown are often discarded.

Economic Disposals

There are many cases where vegetables are not shipped due to economic factors such as fluctuations in crop prices caused by weather changes, and rising distribution and labor costs.

Difficulty in Predicting Weather

The increasing instability of weather changes makes weather forecasting more difficult, leading to challenges in selecting crops to grow and planning harvest schedules.

Labor Shortages

A significant number of people are needed during peak times for tasks such as harvesting and pollination. If enough labor cannot be secured, it directly leads to reduced yields.
